What it means
It has been said, "the best way to win a fight is to never have gotten into one in the first place." This is the aim of situational awareness and avoidance. Avoiding contentious situations or potential conflicts before they occur or become full-blown. Why? As stated, "the only guaranteed method of surviving a violent encounter is to avoid it in the first place."
A well-known author by the name, "Steve Tarani," highlights this term as, Prefense.
However, since it is not always possible to avoid violent encounters; you may be left with no alternative except to employ an adequate Defense. This is as natural as drinking water, eating food, or brushing one's teeth. It endeavors to preserve life and maintain good health.
Desired Outcome
Derived from the use of Two words, "Prefense and Defense," which depict two opposite acts colliding; the hybrid, "PREFDEF" is its derivative. This is an action in response to an unsolicited, unprovoked and unavoidable aggression herein referred to as a "COUNTERSTEP." When left with no ability to escape, hide or deescalate; you must "meet force with force" as a last resort.
These extreme circumstances notwithstanding, the desired outcome is the preservation of life, the solemnity of the family unit, the protection and security of the home, workplace, or motor vehicle; this is job one. Every member of the human academy has the right to live free of violent assault or criminal invasion to which the first response, therefore, is your own.
Deserving of consideration
At the time of a self or home defense encounter, the defender can only default to their current level of preparedness," and therefore begs the questions:
1. What is the state of your "preparedness?"
2. What is the status of your "toolbox?"
3. What facilities or capabilities do you have onboard that will mitigate, thwart, or bring to an end the unprovoked violent attack against yourself, your family, or another innocent person?
4. What level of maintenance have you performed on said facilities or capabilities, "lately?" You may not answer here and now, but best believe you will have to answer the situation or circumstance then and there.
Are you prepared? Take care of your training needs now and make practice part of your regimen, so that you will not have to, later! Because there is no second place in a lethal situation that requires a first response.
